Airplane Snacks

Traveling is a blast, but you know what isn’t? Being stuck in the sky, starving, and having no choice but to shell out way too much cash for some overpriced nuts and chips. Total bummer, right? So, if you want to avoid this pesky situation, just bring your own food! I used to think that bringing my own food onto a plane was as sneaky as smuggling snacks into the movies but just play by the rules and you can chow down on your own treats while flying high.

Important things to note about bringing food on a plane:

Can you get it through security? The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has specific rules regarding bringing food on a plane. It is important to follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. Since there are no liquids over 100mL or 3.4 oz allowed that means you can wave goodbye to your soup, smoothie, pudding and basically anything “spreadable”. It will be fine on a sandwich, but you cannot bring a jar of jam with you.

Will it affect someone with allergies? Just because you can bring something, it does not mean you should. It is probably best to forego peanut-based snacks to avoid causing unnecessary discomfort to a fellow passenger.

Will it stink up the entire plane? For the sake of everyone on the plane, do not pack overly smelly foods. You should maybe leave the tuna sandwiches at home, as well as anything else that could be an assault to the senses of those around you.

Do you need cutlery to eat it? Since you can’t bring a knife on a plane think about how you will eat your food. You can bring just about anything you can eat with your hands, a spoon, or a fork.

How will you pack the food? Reusable seal bags or compressible containers are easier to store once you’ve finished your food and great for keeping snacks in on your trip. They don’t take up much room in your hand luggage so are great to use. Since you also can not bring an ice pack you might have to rely on an insulated lunch bag to help. Remember to store food in the fridge until you leave or bring something that can be kept at room temperature.

Snack ideas for your next plane ride:

Vegetables and a dip: crunchy vegetables like carrots celery, broccoli, and cucumbers are great snacks when paired with a tzatziki, hummus, or ranch dip.

Charcuterie on the go: pre-sliced meats, cheese, and crackers are a personal favorite of mine for snacking on the go.

Trail mix: trail mix is easy to personalize and make yourself.

Sandwich: making a sandwich at home can save you time and money at the airport plus you can make it how you like.

Snacks I am bringing with me for this trip:

My boyfriend and I went on a trip to Las Vegas for relaxing weekend away last month. The plane ride from Oklahoma to Las Vegas was a little over two hours so I only packed snacks rather than a whole meal. When planning what I would pack I knew I wanted something sweet and something salty. My something sweet is freeze dried fruit and my something salty is cheese & pretzels bites. Now, when it comes to freeze-dried fruit, I have to say, the Great Value variety pack at Walmart is a winner. It has single servings of Asian pear, Fuji apple, and banana & strawberry fruit crisps. For cheese & pretzels, you can’t go wrong with the Whisps brand. Walmart has a variety pack with cheddar, buffalo, and honey mustard flavors.

That was so much fun! But next time we go flying, I will mix it up with some different snacks!
